Why impacted wisdom teeth may need an emergency dentist?

At times a wisdom tooth does not have enough space to erupt or just erupts at an angle and does not develop normally. It causes severe tooth pain and needs emergency treatment for tooth extraction.
Swollen, tender gums and difficulty chewing and opening your mouth are symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth.

What is gum disease?

Bacteria grows on dental enamel and, if not cleaned properly, can accumulate along the gum line as plaque, eventually forming tartar and finding its way under the gum tissue.

Once the bacteria has infected the gum, it causes inflammation and creates pockets of pus that are painful and taste foul.

If the infection is controlled timely, it can cause the gum tissue to pull away from the teeth, loosening their roots and causing them to fall out. It can also affect the jaw bone, making it weak and susceptible to breakage and other serious problems.

What causes a toothache?

A number of factors can be responsible for your toothache and require immediate treatment. One of the most common causes is a dental abscess which is an infection in or around the tooth caused by bacteria attacking the dental pulp and nerves or soft gum tissue.

An impacted wisdom tooth can cause dental pain that requires emergency dental services.

Sometimes, areas around the mouth, such as the sinus, can cause “referred pain”, which is pain felt in the teeth though its origin is elsewhere. Chipped or broken teeth and dislodged dental fillings can also cause intense tooth pain.

Effective home remedies for toothache

Clove oil

Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural anaesthetic. Simply dipping a cotton ball into the oil and placing it on the affected area should provide relief from a toothache.

Saltwater

Saltwater has anti-bacterial properties that can reduce inflammation when used as a rinse. A quarter teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of lukewarm water can provide effective relief.

Pain medication

Simple NSAIDs and Aspirin can provide much-needed relief from severe tooth pain until your appointment at the emergency dental clinic. These are readily available in most homes and drugstores.

Ice packs

Applying a cold compress to an affected area constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow which can block pain signals and provide temporary relief in a dental emergency.
