It’s Valentine’s Day, and this means it’s the season of candies, romance, hearts, and dinner dates. At My Local Dentists West Ryde, we’re in favour of all of that on this day.
But we also care about your dental health, and as far as special days go, Valentine’s Day is as bad for teeth as Halloween and Easter can be.
And we also want any romantic encounters you might have planned to go well.
From a dental perspective, that means bad breath cannot be involved!
So, here, today, we’ve compiled all the advice we can think of to keep your mouth and teeth healthy during Valentine’s Day and to make sure that if you have a date, it isn’t derailed by bad breath.
What You Can Do Just Ahead Of Valentine’s Day
Get those smackable lips! Smooth, soft lips are the most inviting to kiss. Exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub. Or brush your lips lightly with a soft bristle toothbrush every night before you head to bed.
And on Valentine’s Day, a lip balm or gloss with an attractive smell is always a good choice!
Visit My Local Dentists West Ryde for cleaning and whitening. White, clean teeth make you even more attractive, even more kissable. And My Local Dentists West Ryde can help you get them.
We offer in chair Phillips Zoom! Whitening, which lightens and brightens the colour of your teeth with hydrogen peroxide gel and an ultraviolet lamp.
Zoom in-chair whitening is effective and safe, clinically proven to whiten your dull smile up to eight shades and the procedure can be performed in less than an hour.
- Modern in-office teeth whitening procedures, such as Zoom, don’t cause the damaging effects of the teeth whitening techniques of the past.
- In-office dental whitening is administered by your West Ryde dentist; thus, the procedure is safer and reliable.
- Ideal for busy patients.
- The results are instant and long-lasting.
A good cleaning (and possibly scale) also makes your mouth more kissable by removing bacteria, plaque, and tartar, making teeth smoother and breath fresher!
Handle Valentine Candy With Care!
Valentine’s Day is about romance, hearts, cards, and Cupid. But it is also really, really about candy! People of all ages give and receive a variety of sweet treats on Valentine’s Day. But how can you keep your teeth safe when they’re surrounded in sticky residue?
It’s not realistic to tell you to avoid candy altogether, but candy in moderation is the best approach if you can’t resist a candy heart or two. Even then, you should rinse your mouth with water to wash away the sweet particles left behind.
If you really want to avoid cavities and gum disease, then you’ll want to think outside the heart-shaped box on Valentine’s Day. Skip the sugary, sticky candy hearts and caramel-filled chocolates (we will reluctantly agree that chocolate, and particularly dark chocolate, is a pretty safe candy choice) and give non-edible Valentine’s Day gifts.
A Bad-Breath Free Valentine’s Day Dinner
One Valentine’s Day tradition is dinner with your loved one. And you don’t want that dinner marred by bad breath. Here is a step-by-step set of instructions for a Valentine’s Day that deserves a kiss!
Before Dinner
- Brush your teeth and brush (or scrape) your tongue.
- Floss before your date to remove any food that might be stuck in your teeth.
- Kill all existing germs in your mouth with a mouth rinse.
- Eat a dairy-based food for breakfast to strengthen gut bacteria that keeps your stomach happy.
During Dinner
- Order “breath-friendly” foods, such as vegetables and neutral flavoured dishes.
- Avoid foods that cause bad breath such as garlic and onions.
- Drink lots of water as it can tamp down the effects of spicier foods and it keeps your mouth clean.
- If you don’t have breath mints, chew on your garnish. Those herbs can neutralise bad breath.
- When it’s dessert time, don’t order chocolate cake; instead choose a dessert of berries, oranges or apples, which improve your breath by increasing saliva production
- If you can, skip the coffee in favour of lemon tea, which can neutralise bad breath.
- Bring a toothpick or flosser and head to the bathroom and make sure there’s nothing between your teeth after you eat, and rinse your mouth out with water.
After Dinner
- If your stomach is unsettled, take medicine to ease it, especially if you suffer from acid reflux.
- Chew sugar-free gum (with xylitol) to erase bad breath after eating.
